Alfred WONG (b.1979)

 

Alfred Wong is one of the foremost composers of his generation in Hong Kong. His catalogue includes more than a hundred items, with musical works and arrangements for choirs, ensembles and large orchestras. His music has been performed worldwide, including the USA, UK, Sweden, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan and Macao. Among his rich musical output, Nocturne for Victoria Harbour (2000) is hugely popular, having been performed more than 30 times. Hong Kong Children’s Choir has sung his Songs from China (2008) in two of the choir's world tours. In 2009, International Society for Contemporary Music selected Flame (2001), written for organ solo, to be performed in the World Music Days 2009 in Sweden.

Wong is a frequent composer for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, having arranged large-scale symphonic poem Going Upriver at the Qinming Festival (Part I) and symphonic Cantonese opera The Secret Vow from Empress Xiaozhuang. In 2008, the Orchestra commissioned Wong for Digital Hub and received with critical acclaim. The piece has been performed seven times in the course of two years.

Wong is also an active conductor in Hong Kong, collaborating with groups of varied nature: Windpipe Ensemble, Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra and Hong Kong Children’s Choir, to name a few. In 2009, the Sabah Chinese Music Festival invited Wong to conduct at the Festival.

Alfred Wong received his bachelor and master’s degree in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He studied composition with Chan Wing-wah, piano with Cheng Wai, percussion with Lung Heung-wing and conducting with Ho Man-chuen. He is currently teaching courses at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Associate Degree of the HK Institute of Education and School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong. He is currently the artist associate of Hong Kong Festival Wind Orchestra.

本地年青作曲家黃學揚,創作及編寫百多首樂曲,類型包括合唱、室樂以至大型管弦樂,作品曾於美國、英國、瑞典、俄羅斯、紐西蘭、澳洲、新加坡、馬來西亞、中國、台灣及澳門等地演出。他的《維港夜曲》(2000)廣泛演出逾三十次《中國之歌》(2008)由香港兒童合唱團出版樂譜並且兩度帶到海外演出。2009年,管風琴曲《焰》入選國際現代音樂節並在瑞典演奏。

黃氏經常與香港中樂團合作包括編配大型音畫《清明上河圖》(第一部分)、交響粵劇《孝莊皇后之密誓》等。2008年,樂團委約黃氏創作《數碼之源》作為香江華采系列之一,大獲好評,兩年間曾演奏過七次

除作曲及編曲外,他亦經常指揮香港不同類型的藝團,包括竹韻小集、香港女青中樂團、香港兒童合唱團等,2009年,第八屆沙巴華樂節應邀黃氏到沙巴擔任客席指揮。

黃學揚畢業於香港中文大學音樂系,獲文學學士及音樂碩士學位,隨陳永華學習作曲、鄭慧學習鋼琴、龍向榮學習敲擊及何文川學習指揮。現於香港演藝學院、香港教育學院副學士及香港大學專業進修學院教授課程,並為香港節日管樂團駐團藝術家。
